From Bodrum to Didyma: Sailing through history

A brand new itinerary for 2008, a glorious 1-week version of our ever popular 2 week From Halicarnassus to Ephesus tour. Beginning and ending in Bodrum, ancient Halicarnassus, birthplace of Herodotus, this archaeological gulet cruise visits some of the prettiest and most interesting sites in Turkey.

It’s the perfect chance to explore Turkey and enjoy bountiful warm weather, beautiful sunlight, a shimmering sea, fabulous food, and archaeological adventures!

The trip is led by Dr. Michael Metcalfe a charming, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic guide. The highlights are plentiful: from the small harbour of Myndos, where Cassius moored after murdering Caesar, to Iasos, a wealthy port, famed for its fish market and red marble. Iasos’ past vitality is revealed by the splendid ruins that litter the site - from the colonnaded agora to the Roman villa decked with mosaics.

Inland we see two impressive temples, the elegant shrine to Zeus at Euromus, and the gargantuan temple of Apollo at Didyma.

Of course it’s not all archaeology! While at sea there are plenty of coves for swimming, relaxing, and fine dining.

ABOUT THE TOUR GUIDE: Michael Metcalfe is Assistant Professor in Ancient History at The Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences in Sicily. He speaks Greek, Italian, and serviceable Turkish. Michael has led gulet tours for us previously, and received rapturous praise. Not only is he ‘enthusiastic, charming, and knowledgeable’, he is also a natural born organiser.
