This journey is not simply a relaxing cruise focusing on sunbathing and swimming, like most gulet holidays in Turkey — it’s a carefully curated archaeological and cultural exploration led by expert guides. You’ll visit world‑class ancient sites such as Knidos, Kaunos and Halicarnassus together with sites that are far from the usual tourist routes and little visited such as Lydae and Loryma. Each day blends swimming, cruising, superb food, and deep historical insight, creating a uniquely enriching experience.
Cruising the Carian Coast: from Mediterranean to Aegean offers a marvellous combination of superb archaeological sites and a remarkably beautiful maritime landscape – a stretch of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast that so far remains mostly untouched by mass tourism and other modern developments.
Starting in Göcek, a quiet small town in a lovely setting on the Gulf of Fethiye this cruise follows the convoluted shoreline of Caria, made up of deep inlets and long peninsulas forming a complex and diverse geography where land and sea constantly embrace one another. It ends at the lively harbour of Bodrum, ancient Halicarnassus and the birthplace of Herodotus.
Along the way, we visit a series of fascinating archaeological sites, each of them with its own story to tell about the past of Caria, a region that often found itself at the intersection of different cultural and political realms, adopting and adapting features from all of them. They include famous ancient cities like Knidos, in a stunningly beautiful peninsular location overlooking twin harbours, and spectacular Kaunos, overlooked by uniquely elaborate rock-cut tombs. We also get to explore more remote spots, such as the mighty Rhodian fortification at Loryma, one of the best examples of defensive architecture to survive from antiquity, the virtually unknown town, surrounded by evocative grave monuments, and long-forgotten Lydae, hidden away on a wild promontory far away from roads, towns and modern life.
And it’s not all archaeology. We aim for all of our trips to be gastronomic adventures where you can enjoy the local food and wine. Near the lovely little town of Datça, you’ll visit a small winery to try a few bottles and then have lunch at a traditional lokanta, where you’ll be able to sample a variety of delicious, freshly cooked home-style Turkish dishes.
Along with this engrossing narrative about the fate and deeds of humankind throughout time, this gulet cruise in Turkey also offers many opportunities to just sit back and enjoy the magnificent scenery, dip into the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean, or stroll through landscapes of unforgettable beauty – a perfect combination of cultural experience and quality time.

She holds degrees in Classics & Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley (USA), MAs in Nautical Archaeology & Roman Archaeology from Texas A&M University (USA), and Aarhus University (Denmark), respectively, and a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Southampton (UK). Largely focused on the Mediterranean, she has conducted fieldwork on land and under water in Morocco, Italy, Montenegro, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, and Greece; other archaeology projects span from Iran to Abu Dhabi, Germany, and Denmark.
When not in the field, Athena is Senior Researcher at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, and Visiting Associate Professor of Classical and Maritime Archaeology at the Saxo Institute, University of Copenhagen.
What previous guests have to say about Athena:
"Our guide, Athena, was really fabulous. She added huge value to our tour - and made our on-shore visits particularly interesting and rewarding. Our experience with Peter Sommer travel was fabulous. Every aspect from booking, to pre-tour information, the quality of the guides and crew, and the comfort of the boat was wonderful. We were sad when the tour came to an end!" Sarah Nicolson
"Our archeologist guide, Athena, was superb - extremely informative and always very helpful and patient. Truly great, a very engaging communicator." Arush Sarwar
"Dr Athena Trakadas was a powerful combination of high intelligence and competence in making our expedition rewarding. Dr Trakadas was very well prepared and knowledgeable but as an archeological scientist, researcher and University Professor she was absolutely ready to go. She was always helpful and amusing and very enthusiastic. Simply outstanding. The trip exceeded my expectations." Edward Michael Shumate
"Briefings by Athena were a major highlight of the tour. I have been on other ancient history tours who had good guides but Athena was very very good." Peter Chapman
Uğur Çinar
Uğur studied for his guiding course at Aegean University in İzmir before completing a degree in Tourism Management at the Mediterranean University in Antalya. Driven by his passion for nature, he pursued additional specialised courses on flora and fauna and received certification as an expert in 2005. He has also been awarded an expert-level certificate in Arts and Culture Guiding in Istanbul and additionally has a mountain guide license, a qualification held by less than 150 professionals in Turkey.
In 2015, Uğur returned to academia to study Equine Studies at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Istanbul University, further broadening his understanding of animal science and rural environments. Since 2011 Uğur has led a wide range of tours in Turkey for Peter Sommer Travels, accompanying many of our expert historians and archaeologists, continually learning from their extensive knowledge. When he is not guiding, Uğur is a keen beekeeper and semi-amateur farmer, always striving to maintain a close connection to nature and sustainable living.
"Uğur was so charming, caring, considerate and patient. He looked after everyone and everything, and seemed to get on well with everyone -- captain, crew, guests." James Best
"Uğur was a great guide. His organizational skills are excellent and he was very capable juggling the gulet, the crew, the weather, the guests etc and making everything quite seamless for us. He is also very kind and curious. We loved our trip with Peter Sommer Travels. The people involved, the sites, everything was great. It was so nice to able to visit all these sites with knowledgeable guides and return to our beautiful gulet for a relaxing and enjoyable evening." Donald Cretin
"The guides were superb - both extremely informative and always very helpful and patient. Uğur has tons of knowledge, able to answer all questions about modern Turkey, logistics etc. Went out of his way to figure out things (e.g. random questions we had about calligraphy etc.). Very capable of problem solving as challenges came up. An incredible guide." Arush Sarwar
"Dr Athena Trakadas and tour guide Uğur Çinar were a powerful combination of high intelligence and competence in making this wee expedition rewarding. Mr Çinar was just fun to be around, always helpful and amusing. Both were very enthusiastic. The trip exceeded my expectations. Excellent." Edward Michael Shumate
"We benefitted enormously from having Uğur, our second guide with us onboard and on visits. We learnt a lot about Turkey from him. He was amusing, interesting and interested, a perfect guest-facing individual. Overall, we all thought our trip was a great success and very good value for money and we would love to take advantage of another Peter Sommer Travels trip in the future." John Williams
"The two guides were my favorite part of the tour. Both Richard and Uğur were exceptionally kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. I’d like to adopt them both as sons. With his fluency in his native language, I believe Ugur was a vital member of the team. A really wonderful human being who gave me his hand on more occasions than I can count. With delightful fellow guests, two extraordinary guides, delicious food, and the most accommodating crew on an elegant gulet, I loved my two week Lycian Shore cruise. I will forever treasure the experience." Margaret Guiler
"The whole tour was a highlight! Having excellent guides gave an extra depth to whatever we saw. Uğur was a perfect gentleman. His quiet helpfulness was loved and respected by all. Organisation was superb. Even when things were tricky he was unruffled and things got sorted. A lovely man. He was always there when needed." Morwenna Fletcher
What makes this trip different from other gulet holidays in Turkey?
What is life like aboard the gulet?
Your home for the week is a beautiful traditional Turkish gulet, offering comfort, character, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. All cabins are en‑suite and there are generous deck spaces for dining, reading, or simply watching the coastline drift by. Meals are freshly prepared on board, featuring superb traditional Turkish dishes and local produce. The gulet travels with us along the Carian coast, so you can enjoy the pleasure of discovering ancient ruins by day and then returning to the serenity of the sea and our beautiful boat each evening.
Who leads this tour?
Your expert guides are archaeologists and historians, together with certified local guides, with long experience of working in Turkey. Their knowledge of Caria from the ancient prehistoric civilisations through the classical world of Greece and Rome, and via the Byzantine, medieval and Ottoman periods together with the region’s living traditions brings the sites and landscapes vividly to life. Please click on the tour experts’ names under the tour dates to read full bios and testimonials.
Will there be opportunities to swim?
Absolutely, yes — and they are one of the great pleasures of this journey. Depending on the day’s schedule, the gulet will anchor in a quiet bay or cove in the morning or afternoon, giving you time for a refreshing swim in turquoise waters before or after one of the site visits. On some days, according to where we overnight, you can also choose to swim first thing in the morning before breakfast. As well as cabin towels, swimming towels are also provided, together with floats, kayaks and paddle boards ladders.
How much walking does this tour involve?
Our Cruising the Carian Coast trip includes regular walks through archaeological sites, historic towns, and natural landscapes. Distances vary, but you can expect some uneven and broken ground, some inclines and declines on hillsides, and occasional longer site visits. There is some clambering over large rocks to visit the fortress at Loryma and the most challenging walk section is a hike of about 45 minutes up a beautiful hillside (then the return descent) to explore the ancient site of Lydae. We take everything at a measured pace, with time to pause, absorb the atmosphere, and enjoy expert commentary. Good walking shoes and a reasonable level of fitness will ensure you get the most from the experience. The tour is rated 3 out of 5 on our intensity scale, meaning it is classed as intermediate. You can find out more by visiting the fitness levels page on our website.
