Temple tombs at Kaunos in Turkey
Dating to the time of Alexander the Great, the rock cut tombs at Kaunos, beside the Dalyan River, are one of the great ancient wonders of Turkey. This photo shows that the main tomb was only part-finished, with the bottom half simply smoothed by tomb builders hanging from ropes. Invariably tombs such as these were robbed in antiquity, long before archaeologists arrived on the scene. A large number of these temple tombs decorate the cliffs of Caria in southwest Turkey. It's well worth visiting on one of our escorted cultural tours.
