Carved architrave Didyma
The temple of Apollo at Didyma is the grandest of the great Ionian temples to survive and one of the most famous sites on Peter Sommer Travels' Halicarnassus to Ephesus itinerary. It was added to and renovated on numerous occasions throughout antiquity. In the 2nd century AD, large Gorgoneia such as this one were added to the corners of its cornice. They symbolise the mythical monster Medusa, whose gaze would turn any unfortunate viewer to stone.
