Ancient columns in Kos
The re-erected pillars of a Doric portico, or stoa, are among the many ancient remains uncovered beneath and between the houses of Kos. As a result of careful urban planning after the devastating 1930 earthquake, the modern town centre contains a network of large archaeological parks, scattered with houses, temples, altars, bath houses, Early Christian churches and wonderful mosaics. On our cruise, there is ample time to stroll around and explore them at leisure, perhaps interspersed with the occasional coffee break. The columns shown here belong to an ancient gymnasium, or sports centre. Find out about our Cruising the Northern Dodecanese tour.
