The Monastery on Patmos
The monastery of St. John the Divine on Patmos, founded in 1066, is one of the most important pilgrimages in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The crenellations and bell-towers of this monastic complex, heavily fortified against pirate attacks, are the dominant feature of the island and its surrounding seas. The visit to this sacred place is a highlight of the Peter Sommer Travels cultural cruise in the Northern Dodecanese. Find out about our Cruising the Northern Dodecanese tour.
