The fortifications at Rhodes
Rhodes, city and island, was held by the Knights of Rhodes from 1309 to 1522. The order has a colourful history, having started as the Knights Hospitaller of Jerusalem, moved through being the Knights of Cyprus, then of Rhodes, and still surviving as the Order of Malta. In Rhodes, they have left a major imprint on the face of the city, including mighty fortifications that withstood a whole series of major sieges. This unique facet of Dodecanese history adds an extra dimension to the Peter Sommer Travels archaeological and cultural cruise in the Southern Dodecanese.
