The Knights of Rhodes built this powerful crusader castle, now at the heart of modern day Bodrum in south west Turkey. Its aim was to defend the coast, and their own interests, against Turkish onslaughts. The castle almost certainly stands on the site of the palace of Mausolus, a local governor who ruled on behalf of the Persians. Mausolus made the ancient city of Halicarnassus here his capital, embellishing it with superb fortifications, soaring temples, and his tomb, the 'mausoleum', one of the seven wonders of the world.
