Cruising the Carian Coast › Ancient fortifications at Loryma

Built about 2,300 years ago, the mighty fortifications at Loryma in Caria were built to guard and protect a key harbourage on the Turkish coast. The impressive defensive walls encircle a rocky headland overlooking a large bay. Its position almost directly opposite the ancient Greek city of Rhodes, lends support to a theory that it was built by Rhodian craftsmen trying to deny the harbourage to enemy fleets.
