Built by the Byzantine emperor Justinian almost 1,500 years ago, the Haghia Sophia ('Holy Wisdom'') remained the greatest church in Christendom for a millennium. Once the centrepiece of the city of Constantinople, today it still dominates the skyline of Istanbul, Turkey.
