Cruising the Carian Coast › Temple tombs at Kaunos

Dating to the time of Alexander the Great, the rock cut tombs at Kaunos are a veritable wonder of the world. A large number of these temple tombs decorate the cliffs of Caria in southwest Turkey. This photo reveals how the main tomb was only finished, with the bottom half simply smoothed by tomb builders hanging from ropes. Invariably tombs such as these were robbed in antiquity, long before archaeologists arrive on the scene. Find out about our Carian Coast Turkey tours
