Ephesus in Turkey

Why Go?
Because the ruins of Ephesus in Turkey stand witness to a city that flourished for nearly 2000 years, from its ancient Greek foundations via its role as the capital of Roman Asia to its long life as a Christian centre. And they do so in the most evocative way possible. No wonder: Ephesus was one of the richest cities of its time, boasting not only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (the once-enormous Temple of Artemis), but also one of the first known systems of street lighting, a 28,000 seat theatre and countless striking monuments.

Recommended age if travelling with children
Any age over 7. The site is quite large and lacks shade. It involves a fair amount of walking, so make sure you start your tour at the upper entrance and work downhill.

Don’t Miss
The Roman terrace Houses. They do charge extra, but these are a must see. A series of rich Roman town houses, extraordinarily well preserved, in places up to the second floor, with spectacular mosaics, frescoes, carved decorations, furnishings and much more. Awesome!

Top Tip
Visit the Ephesus museum before you go to the actual site. It houses a whole host of marble statues, bronze furniture, and lots of fascinating items found in the excavations – from a doctor’s surgical kit to beautiful glassware. Leave the site until the end of the day when the crowds have gone.

Getting there
The most atmospheric, restful, and interesting way to travel to see Ephesus is aboard a luxurious and traditional wooden gulet. Ephesus was the port of Asia after all. Come on one of our gulet cruises on the Aegean coast of Turkey led by an expert archaeologist!
