Dr Spencer Pope
Spencer received his PhD in Classical Archaeology from Brown University, after studying and living in both Greece and Italy for several years, and is now Associate Professor in the Department of Classics at McMaster University in Ontario (Canada). A specialist in Greek architecture, urbanization and the development of the built environment, his research focuses on the expansion of the Greek world and the establishment of overseas settlements in Sicily and Southern Italy.
Spencer has excavated extensively in Italy, and continues to spend several months of each year in Rome, Sicily and Athens. The author of several articles on Greek and Indigenous Sicily as well as Greek financial inscriptions, he is currently completing a monograph on the frontiers of the Greek cities of Sicily in the Archaic and Classical Periods.
