Escorted Tours in Montenegro
Even though Montenegro is one of the smallest countries on the shores of the wider Mediterranean, it is one country of great contrasts. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the bay of Kotor. Here, the cliffs of the Dinaric Alps surround the bay on three sides and touch the pristine azure waters of the Adriatic. The same can be said for Lake Skadar, where the snow-covered peaks of the Prokletije mountains overlook serene villages on the lake's shore.
These lands were the homeland of the ancient Illyrians, the first settlers of the eastern Adriatic shores that we know by name. The Romans conquered them, adding the first new element to what would become a complex historical mosaic, featuring Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans, and Slavs. The combination of dramatic landscapes and diverse history bestows a unique charm and allure on modern Montenegro. Kotor, for example, with its labyrinth of medieval streets and imposing cliff-face fortress, is an excellent microcosm of this melting pot and is justly now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Budva is a similar example, huddled behind its defences on a little peninsula, with fine Venetian streets, medieval churches and a museum which takes us back to Roman times and beyond to Greeks and the powerful Illyrian peoples.
Architecture, cuisine, traditions, and even language vary and change rapidly as you travel, bearing witness to the country's rich history.
