Weather in Montenegro
The weather and climate in Montenegro are largely determined by two main factors. The first is orography, which refers to the influence of mountains and valleys on the landscape. This can be observed in the country’s varied topography, including the orientation and closeness of these features to the sea and other significant bodies of water, such as Skadar Lake. The second factor is the Mediterranean Sea itself, which plays a crucial role in shaping Montenegro’s climate.
The climate zones in Montenegro can be divided into two groups: Coastal and continental. The coastal zone or Adriatic region boasts long, dry, and hot summers, with temperatures often reaching 30°C (86°F) and mild, rainy winters. Along the coast, the dominant winds in Montenegro are north-northeast and southern winds. Among local winds, the most notable is the “bura” on the coast. During summer, the sea breeze (during the day) and land breeze (at night) are daily periodic winds. Inland, the mountainous areas experience a cooler, alpine climate, with snowy winters and refreshing summers. The region around Mount Orjen, near the Bay of Kotor, holds the European record for annual rainfall, creating lush, green landscapes.
