The rich heritage of Ancient Greece is on display in countless museums around the world, forming the artistic highlight of many collections, and drawing people in to learn about the Ancient Mediterranean and the distant origins of so many of our own cultures. These far-flung treasures are just a tiny fraction of the artefacts that have survived to the present day, and the modern museums in Greece itself are some of the very best in the world: beautifully lit, wonderfully organised, and succinctly described, the objects they have chosen are displayed to perfection.
These museums, glorious as they are, are just one aspect of the archaeological legacy of Greece that is waiting to be explored, and the many tombs, temples and farmhouses that dot the countryside complement the many entire ancient cities that have been excavated: cities such as Knossos, Mycenae, Tiryns, Corinth, Messene and Athens itself. They sometimes stand in glorious isolation, revealed in their near-entirety, and are sometimes partly covered over by modern towns and cities, but in every case they serve to explain the history and culture of Greece in a clear and vivid manner that our history books alone cannot convey.
